A good question!. I'd suggest unsliced bread, as, no doubt, others will.

I say this seriously, because most of the sliced bread in the UK, brown or white, is absolute rubbish. I'm a chef, but baking bread is not like making Bechamel sauce - all you need is flour, water, yeast and a reasonable oven. Anyone can make bread.

The problem is, that commercial breadmaking was ruined by a method known as the Chorleywood Process, in which the proving process of yeast was accelerated. The Chorleywood Process, however, has been modified by some responsible large -scale bakers, most notably Warburtons, who seem to have reached a compromise between short-life, natural bread, and breads that can be opened and kept for more that 2 days and retain a degree of freshness.

The worst manifestion is the Milton Keynes Process. Dough is commercially produced en masse, distributed nationally, and baked in store. A lot of what goes in your breadmaking machine could well emanate from this process. The Dough lasts for 6 days, so it must be full of preservatives and associated crap.

Not quite the answer that you wanted, I am sure, but bread is the staff of life and much of it in the UK is total muck.
