I RECENTLY HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT I HAVE GALLSTONES AND THE SURGURY IS THE BEST DECSION FOR ME. I'M NOT SO SURE ABOUT THAT. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE OUTCOMES OR COMPLICATIONS OF HAVING THIS SURGURY? OR IS THERE ANY OTHER TREATMENTS FOR THIS?

I just had the surgery a few months ago. It was my first surgery and I was a little scared but it was a breeze. I was fine a couple days later and I haven't had any problems since. The surgery hurts much less than a attack from the stones!!!!

I worked on a surgical floor for 3 yrs and probably the most common surgery we did were Lap cholecystectomies, or open cholecystectomies.
When the pt was too scared to go thru the surgery, the doctor would send them home on a low fat diet until the next gall bladder attac and after they had enough of the pain and trips to the ER, they had their gall bladder removed and usually said if they knew that was all there was too it, they would have done it a long time ago. In short, I would reccomend you just get it over with. You go to surgery, they put you to sleep and remove your gall bladder which basically is a useless organ anyways.
They do check your bile duct while you are in surgery to see if there are any stones left. Sometimes when stones are left behind, you have to go back and have what is called an ERCP
(endoscopic retrograde cholangial pancreatography) The surgery to remove your gall bladder is simple and thousands of people all over the world have this procedure done every day. I never seen a complication or anyone die from having their gall bladder removed. Go for it! Just get it over with. you will do fine.

Gallstones are just exactly what the name implies. They are hardened bile produced by the liver that is stored inside of the gallbladder. The gallbladder helps us to digest fats. Sometimes one of the stones can pass into the bile duct and cause severe pain and cramps.

(I have had this happen before and I thought I was going to die from the pain. It was worse than childbirth!)

Most doctors will recommend that you eat a less fatty diet that is low in sodium. They usually send you to a gastroenterologist who does an ultrasound to see how many stones you have and whether you need surgery or not. Sometimes you can have one attack and be fine and never have another for the rest of your life. Sometimes you can have a series of them.
The surgery is usually done through the navel and you are back to work or school in one or two days.

There are some medical alternatives, but usually when stones are large enough to be visible they can be dangerous. If they plug the hepatic/bile duct, or the tube leading from the gall bladder to the stomach, it can result in excruciating pain. Sometimes the gall bladder can get infected and even become gangrenous. Nowadays they can remove it laparascopically, so you can have 1-day surgery and be back to work in a matter of days. Piece of cake - not worth wasting time on alternative therapies that usually just waste time and money, especially since you body can function quite well without it.

My mother has gone through surgery, well in my opinion you should only consider surgery once the gallstones are getting painful. Otherwise live with it, it will start disturbing you naturally when it need to be removed. Good Luck
