Have you gone to a doctor and been diagnosed?

Sometimes, the over-the-counter stuff isn't as good for you as it might seem. Sometimes people take a suppressant when they should take an expectorant, or vice versa.

It could be pneumonia, bronchitis, allergies or asthma. Or many other things.

The cough is just a symptom of a larger picture. Stopping a symptom only hides the larger picture, longer, sometimes causing even more damage to your body.

Sometimes things like steam help, but depending on the underlying cause of your cough, steam could be a really bad idea.

I would think that you should just make an appointment with your family physician (shouldn't be more than $90, or so) and get checked out.

Obviously, do NOT smoke.

Wish I had better advise.

Since you are or have been taking meds, would indicate you have been seen by a doctor.. what was the diagnosis? If the meds aren't resolving the problem, perhaps you need a different diagnosis.

Age becomes a factor here as does your history. Several conditions will result in the frequent coughing.. but you mention nothing about it being a productive or non productive cough. You really reveal nothing that would give any indication of what the problem could be.

You probably have an allergy and the sinus drainage is going into your throat. You have to take something to dry up the drainage. If the stuff from your nose is yellow, then you have probably an infection, and must get on an antibiotic. An old farm remedy is to take a cup, fill it up with warm water, and put some salt in it, then sniff it and let it run down your sinus, then spit it out. Do it several times, the salt is healing and will help dry up the drainage. There is Robitussin that has both cough and sinus med. in it. It is liquid, check it out too. You have to figure out what it is first, then go from there. Good luck.

Things like honey, cayenne, vinegar, lemon, vita C, and water always work. or try gargling with thieves oil (it burns, but with a combination of cayenne tablet thing it clears up ANYTHING)

Get some Vita-biotic tablets (from the 'eclectic institute' company. white plastic bottle, light purple label), available at healthfood stores. take 2-3 every hour or so (or as it says on the bottle). I got a real bad flue once and taking that in combination with an echinacea/propolis (a pollen like substance bees make) it all cleared up in 26 hours while friends and family were getting penicillin shots and antibiotics for weeks.
Really hope this helps. :)

This works best for going to sleep.
Take two strips of flannel (if none is available, old rags would do)
Wet one down with hot water, wring it out, and wrap it around your neck. Take the dry one and wrap it around the wet one and safety-pin it in place.
This was my great-grandmother's remedy and it does work! I had bronchitis once and that was the only thing that quieted my cough.

Try taking vitamin C with Rose Hops and gargling with antiseptic mouth wash before going to bed at night.

See an MD. You don't mention if it is productive or not, or if you have fever. Lots of medicines can have cough as a side effect. See your doctor.

OK - this sounds really weird, but it worked for me when I was desperate enought to try anything. Put Vick's Vapo-Rub on the bottoms of your feet, and a pair of thick socks.. If you do this at bedtime, you'll notice a difference by morning.
