"-" refers to th eold standard and "+" to the new one. For example all DVD-players will play DVD-R discs (since this was first released) but not all of them can play DVD+R discs (only those released after 2002).

These apply to different formats on DVD's. Different manufacturers use slightly different formats. The + or - doesn't apply to CD's,,:-)=

-R is recordable in and +R is writable
