They ask 1000 people and then multiply that by the number of people in the country.

Example.
I started listening to a small radio station.
A couple of days later I was stopped in the street by a market researcher and one of the questions was "Which is your favourite radio station?"

I gave the name of the small station I was now listening to.

Sure enough, two weeks later this station was boasting on air that going by the latest statistics they have 161,687 new listeners!

"They" were little old me!

Hi, I work in the field. There are two accepted ways for measuring and providing ratings;

1- Interviews - ask a sample of lets say 500 people everyday about what they were watching on tv during the past weeks. This is called a quantitative sample whereby the results are translated into results against the total population of a city or even a country depending on the assigment.

2- People meters - some research firms pay people to monitor their TV viewership habits. So for $150 a month, they put this device at your home, connect it to your tv and they monitor the results, not as simple as it sounds, each family member has to sign in if he/she is watching and sign off, when they leave, there are buttons for this.

Seperate tvs do count, it boils down to your personal viewership. Of course ratings are not terribly reliable, but they are an indicator and companies pay a lot of money for them to make sure they are spending their millions in the right spots.

I am including a few sites, if u want to further investigate this issue.

I would also like to know that, if you flick between two programs does it count as you having watched both, neither or what? If your cable box is switched on but not your main TV does it count as you watching whatever channel the box is on?
