All you do is the following in the given order:
P-parentheses
E-exponents
M-multiplication
D-division
A-addition
S-subtraction
You can make up a saying like "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally." That's one way to remember it. Sometimes you can make up random sentences or phrases that are easier to remember. But first you work with the #s or variables in the parentheses, then those with exponents, and so on and so forth. (If you do the steps out of order (as you may already know--?), then the answer tends to be wrong.)

A good way to remember it is this phrase: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. The capital letters tell you what to do first.
Parentheses------Please
Exponents---------Excuse
Multiplication------My
Division------------Dear
Addition-----------Aunt
Subtraction-------Sally
Or you can make up your own phrase to remember it.
