Stalin wanted to keep East Berlin for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was decided well in advance of the Final Battles that Germany would be partitioned between the Victors. Imagine this, you've been attacked, invaded and devastated by a country twice in less then 30 years, your going to want to make sure they can NEVER hit you back. A divided Germany makes them weak, they can never threaten your coutnry again.

Secondly, East Germany was part of the Iron Curtain Stalin created against the threat of Western Aggression. The German Bloc was part of the Buffer States, meaning any Allied Attack on the CCCP would result in a horrendous ground war, and a slow, painful slog towards Moscow

The Communist Goal was to own the whole world. And Germany was special for the Commies.
Surprising how many Democrats still think that communism/socialism needs to be given another chance.
And it is doing fine in North Korea.

There was a race to get German scientists who were good at rockets and nuclear science. The U.S. got some, and the Soviets got some.
