Around 1996, companies started using higher quality products in their cars. Today, a 2006 from any make should have a well built sound system. And if it comes with a factory subwoofer and/or seperates, should sound very nice. Our 2005 Forester has all the audio options and is very nice sounding. Doesn't thump if that's what you're looking for, but factories don't build cars for loud bass, that's what aftermarket support is for.

There is one exception to the normal Subaru Stock equipment. Its rare, but available on ebay, etc.

This was the TOP TOP of the line system.
With the introduction of the Outback H6-3.0 VDC models, Subaru is pleased to be the exclusive partner of McIntosh Audio, offering the first original equipment automotive system from McIntosh.

The McIntosh AM/FM/CD/Weatherband cassette system installed in Outback H6-3.0 VDC sedans and wagons features 11 speakers in seven locations. A five-channel McIntosh amplifier drives the system, producing 200 watts of power. A patented McIntosh circuit design eliminates distortion at higher volumes and a superior six-band, four-channel parametric equalizer helps tailor the sound.

i've had no problems with the quality. my first wrx had the factory sub (6" amplified mounted under passenger seat) and it sound pretty good. the wrx i have now does not have that powered sub and it still sounds alright for factory. there are companies that make a form-fitting enclosure for the trunk of wrx/sti models that fit in the left side of the trunk that fit a single 10" or 12". i'm not sure what brand the stock door speakers are, but the soundstage isn't too shabby. nothing to brag about, but nothing to be ashamed of.

If you get the premium upgrade the sound quality is good, but it won't rattle the mirrors. If you want a good sounding balanced system the factory premium is great. If you want one of those obnoxious sounding boom boxes don't get the factory system.
