I don't know about the rest of you, but "coming out" to me is one of the most personal decisions you can make. Don't you think that it's a little silly that they made a day for it? Like, oh gotta tell the parentals I'm a homo...National Coming Out Day is next week. I see the good intentions and everything, but I think it is overall just a bad idea...Coming Out Day should be whenever the hell you feel comfortable enough to come out and not given a specific day.

Actualy the premise behind National coming out day is not to presure people to come out of the closet, it is to start a conversation and get more acceptance across lines.
It also signifies the history of the march on washington, and to remember Stonewall and so many other historical things that have happened to GLBT people in the past.
If you are a GLBT person in this world today and you dont know your history you should, because people have suffered and died and fought for your rights (however small you may think they are we do have some) and you have to know how far we have come since 1969, where we could have been beaten and jailed for being who we are today.
So on the National coming out day, The theme is Talk about it!
So if someone is struggleing with coming out and they realy want to and maybe they just dont know how to start the conversation it makes a great conversation starter for them because now they can say to the person they are coming out to "hey did you know today is national coming out day?" and move on in the conversation from there.
Check out this website and you will understand why they started the day: http://www.hrc.org or http://www.pflag.org
Respecfully,
H&W

What are you twelve? Go back in the history of gay and lesbians.. It is deemed National Coming Out Day for a purpose...

Do you know what stonewall is?
National Coming Out Day is observed on October 11 by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities and their allies. It is highly encouraged for participants in this movement to wear red to signify to the world their desire for everyone to know who they are and what they believe in.

The day commemorates October 11, 1987, when 500,000 people marched on Washington, USA, for gay and lesbian equality. National Coming Out Day events are aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community among the general populace in an effort to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement.

In the United States, the Human Rights Campaign manages the event under the National Coming Out Project offering resources to LGBT couples, parents and their children as well as straight friends and relatives to promote awareness of LGBT families living honest and open lives.

Candace Gingrich became the spokesperson for the day in April 1995.

So, who cares? why go against your own kind? don't be lame there's so many people that hate us, we have to at least defend each other, come on now! Think of how many stupid holydays straight people have, just to make $$$$ like Valentine's Day for example. i could argue how lame V day is because you should express your love every day, and it's just a way for Halmark to make lots of money off of people by pressuring them to buy each other presents lol. so it's not so bad we have like 1 holyday! yay for us!

no one is making anyone come out that doesn't want to. I'm already out, and accepted by my family, friends and co workers. it's more about making people aware, maybe starting a conversation....letting those are are still "in" know that's it's ok to come out. you don't want to come out? well, that's your decision. but don't diss those of us who are...and those of us who are trying to summon up the courage to do so. we all need to stick together and support each other.... not trash each other.

today is coming out day

I came out to a few people here at work today but yeah it is kind of silly.

I am just coming out to one or two people at a time because it is not really that big a deal. The only reason I came out to a few people today is because a gay guy was dieing to tell the whole office so I made him promise not to tell till tomorrow so I could come out in my own time instead of have him out me.
God it was kind of pathetic really.

I agree.........they make a day out of everything.....I can see all the parents nervous on the eve of coming out day..and then breathing a sigh of relief when it passes...being facetious here of course..but yes it is stupid to have a coming out day..it should be when the time is right ,not by some agenda driven calendar

Well that's like black history month. Why should it be confined to the coldest-and shortest-month of the year?
