The first time I went into labor, it felt like achy lower back cramps. After an hour into it, I could really tell because the pain would start and then travel around to my abdomen and get stronger, then ebb off. The pains would repeat themselves in a rhythmic pattern. False labor (Braxton Hicks contractions) generally don't follow a good pattern and they also stop if you change activities of lay down. Real labor does not stop.)

Please do not wait for your water to break to find out if you really are in labor. Many women don't have their water broken until they are almost to second stage and that would be dangerous to your baby.

If you are having rhythmic labor pains (time from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next to get the pattern) which do not stop if you walk or lay down, then you need to get to your hospital or midwife. The practitioner will ask you how far apart your pains are and the answer will be the time from the beginning of one pain to the beginning of the next.

Good luck.

My first time I had no clue. I had a pain at like 8pm but went to bed. Woke up the next morning with full blown contractions. Labor is like really bad cramps. Real contractions get stronger, longer and closer together.

I have had 3 children and although most labor symptoms will have alot of similarities, they will have differences as well! "Cramping", also known as contractions will occur, they become stronger and closer together as labor intensity increases. I had little or no appetite in the couple of days beforehand as well as extremely sleepless nights! Often times a woman's water will break and that gives the clearest sign of the onset of labor.

I just started feeling contractions, my belly would get tight and it felt like strong cramps. It started on a Friday evening and I didn't sleep much on Friday night. They continued through Saturday, but we still took the dogs out for a walk, went out to lunch, watched a movie (I can't remember what!) Saturday night I couldn't sleep so I sat on a comfy chair in the living room and dozed when I could. For me the pain was never unbearable or horrid. I would just relax my body and take deep breathes.
On Sunday it continued but the contractions never got closer than 5 minutes apart (you time them from the begining of one until the begining of the next one). We finally decided to go to the hospital around 2pm and our little guy was born 20 minutes later!!
Congrats and Good Luck!

well at first it woke me up and I thought i ws having maybe gas pains, and I went back to sleep, then 45 minutes or so later I had another pain, I thought to myself if it happens again im going to get up and time it, well 30 minutes later it woke me up and was getting worse, so I knew, I went to the bathroom and had blood down there so I knew, I rushed to the hospital and was already at a 6 1/2 dialated, with contractions at a minute and a half apart!

Im pregnant with my 2nd so you better bet im rushing out the door the minute I feel anything! Mine came way to fast, from the time of my first contraction until he was out 4 hours! Im shooting for 3 this time ha ha !

I havent gone yet, but I imagine the endless contractions and feeling like my insides were splitting open might be a clue.

Or if my water broke.

They say true contractions start in your back and work around the entire belly, causing the urge to bear down, as is pooping.
