Red-ear sliders are the most common pet turtle in the US, and honestly, one of the harder species to care for correctly.

I usually find that people who ask about them really don't know the cares needed. For example, they don't know that a baby turtle should be raised in at least a 20 gallon tank filled 1/2 way. That the water needs to be heated to 75-80 degrees and strongly filtered.

They rarely know that the turtle needs good lighting that simulates the sun, especially with Ultra-violet B type rays, or that the diet is a key point in a healthy turtle. Too many people want ot feed their turtle with cheap food or flakes, lettuce, or hamburger- none of which is healthy. They are almost always unaware that it takes about $100 to set up a minimal habitat.

You can try http://www.redearslider.com or http://www.austinsturtlepage.com for more info and ideas.

If you are ready for a pet Red-ear slider, and live in NYC, you should be able to just start calling pet shops and find one pretty soon.

Many animal rescue organizations adopt out larger red ears for a small fee (some give them away free) as there are MANY people who want to get ride of them after they grow out of that cute baby stage.

But you will probably have to prove you will provide proper care ie a pond not a small aquarium.
