Are those things really safe? I mean I've seen infants in those things and it looks like they could just lean a little to the side and flip out onto the floor! How can those things be safe?

I agree. I've seen infants in them and while the mother was walking around I was just waiting for that kid to lean just a little more to the left and he would've been heading toward the concrete.

They're very safe when used correctly and they're pretty easy to use correctly. I've used slings and mei tais with both my children. I figure several thousand years of parenting can't be wrong. ;-)

The physics: With baby in an upright position, all you have to do is make a pouch for baby's butt. With the baby's knees "frogged" up higher than its bottom, baby can't fall out. The fabric of the sling comes up behind baby's shoulders and holds baby close to you quite snugly. I can bend sideways, lean down to pick something up (support baby's head with one hand when you do this), and even put my toddler on my hip, and my baby doesn't slip at all.

They're very safe.

The baby is tied directly to your body. Yes, the child could lean -- and you would feel them lean.

Sit in a hammock sometime (in a sporting good store, maybe) and lean to the side. The hammock leans with you.

Slings work the same way. The baby can lean, move, wiggle, and change postitions, all while being held securely in place.

I have known many women who have spent a lot of time using a lot of different styles of slings. (I've used two different styles with my own son, too.) Among us all, I've NEVER heard of a SINGLE instance of the little one slipping or flipping out.

It's really the equivalent of holding the child in your arms. Except your arms don't get tired.

I have a Dr. Sears baby sling and I swear by it! I work from home and there's time when my son (4 months) just wants to be cuddled and I can't really hold him. If you use the sling properly and you're aware of your child's positioning and his/her tendencies, then I think they're completely safe.

They are absolutely safe if you know how to use them! You just tighten it up with baby in there and they ride around safe, secure and happy! I've used slings with all three of mine. They are WONDERFUL and make life easier and help to keep baby happy.

Theyre only as safe as the parent using them.

People in unindustrialized nations have been using them since time began. Their populations dont seem to be effected by a dramatic loss of infant life due to sling malfunctions.

If theyre fitted right, and the infant is placed in them right, it would take a lot of unnoticed squirming to fall out.

The ones made with D rings are useless, never use those. Theyre all sorts of dangerous. The loops of fabric made especially to your size are much safer.

I used one for my baby before he got to big. You gotta be careful like in all things but they are safe.

They're safe if you're wearing them properly.

I'd be lost without mine. I can get so much done while wearing my baby in his sling.

I agree but they wouldn't be allowed to sell them if they weren't safe - especially for babies.
