This is an after-thought from my previous question, about the Jews. Could we have an intelligent debate about this? As a Western European, I don't understand why Muslims and Jews can't see their common humanity, the common roots in their religions, their common ancestors. We are ALL people, with the same concerns about our families, our homes, our contentment. Is it possible to take the politics out of a question like this, and talk as people? Wouldn't it be a great stride forward? Am I naive, or stupid, or missing something? No abuse, please. Let's talk intelligently.

It sounds wonderful, and so simple. I remember watching the TV a few years back, and a mother was talking about her child, who had been killed in some attack. i can't remember where she was from, she could have been Palestinian, Israeli, Irish or form any number of countries. What she said was "This will continue until we love our children more than we hate our enemies".

I suppose it comes down to tribalism in some form (religion, nationality, race). I believe we have a biological need to "belong". In order to do that, there must be people who do not belong, which means you can either feel superior to them, or inferior. Both conditions produce mistrust, and fear.

I have no idea how we could ever change that. It is certainly not in a politician's interest to do so.

I agree 100% . I think one reason we do not have more religious tolerance is because of the common human trait to feel we are right. Christianity has a good dose of this because Jesus made it clear He was, "The Way". This is hard to understand sometimes, in my opinion. I think the Pope did us all a favor with his recent remark about Muslims...he brought this religious tolerance subject out into the open. Peace and love, I say.

It is difficult to tolerate another group of people telling you all the time that they are better than you are. Everyone wants to be right and have things done their way. Allowing others to think they are right and admitting you may be wrong goes against those who fervently believe their way is the true way. Allowing you your belief is to chip away from my belief being the right one.
