Is volunteer work a good idea? NO!
IT IS A FABULOUSLY MAGNIFICENT JOB!
Ok - the basics are out of the way and we can talk. I admire your articulate identification of what you hope to receive from this. May I suggest that you start in a field holding some interest for you.
Smaller non-profits tend to need the help the most. Besides needing the numbers for tax filings, they need numbers for grants and donor appeals.
I consult non-profits for the same reasons you do. Very few have any kind of external / or auditory review of finances. My guess is that a number of them will have no fiscal policies. People have a great vision and go out and act on it. Finances are seldom a part of the vision - at least financial control and accountability.
Feeding programs/youth programs/environmental programs/private schools/self-help programs/religious groups/ and so forth.
God bless you - you are so needed!

Check with your local Habitat for Humanity office and see if they could use volunteers to help build homes for those in need. I did 2 summers ago and some last year and it was wonderful. I felt like I was really contributing to some cause ... volunteers are needed in so many areas....you can also check with your local Volunteer Center...they're always looking for volunteers for certain projects too
Good luck! and have fun too!

Accounting skills are always in demand. Places like the Red Cross, churches, United Way agencies always need volunteers. Knowing you are helping someone without thought of fame or fortune is a very gratifying experience.

Call the local united way and ask them.

Or ask at a hospital, soup kitchen, or social services office.

Talk to the principal or headmaster at a local school.

Ask at a local boy scouts, girl scouts, 4H, or other youth office.

If you get this far and nobody can use your help, you either live in a utopia, or you're wearing your "Will commit murder with an ax for food" t-shirt again...
