why did Iceman win pyro in Xmen 3?

If Iceman creates ice and pyro creates fire, then if they fight wouldn't they cancel each other out?

I thought someone got him wet and that gave Iceman the opportunity he needed... I'd have to watch it again, 'cuz I do remember him walking away and saying something like "ya shoulda stayed in school, bro"

I guess because iceman was still in school and had developed his powers
