One of the most common causes for having bright red blood per rectum (blood when you wipe) is an anal fissure - its a small cut or break in the tissue lining your anus/colon. It can be caused by straining to have a bowel movement, or anal sex, etc. Usually, bowel rest and time will heal it.

Or, you may have hemorrhoids that are bleeding - that's basically enlarged, fragile blood vessels that bleed easily - internal ones are rarely felt but can cause you to bleed, external ones are sometimes painful and also can cause you to have bright red blood.

Or it could be more serious. In older men (i.e.) men over 50 - blood from the colon is assumed to be colon cancer until proven otherwise - usually with a colonoscopy. And unfortunately, some cancers can occur earlier.

In the future, try to avoid straining and bearing down a lot when you have to have a bowel movement - you may need to take stool softeners and drink more fluids for this. You should also visit your doctor. to make sure this isn't something more serious.

It sounds like diverticulitis which is a polyp that develops in the lower intestine. Irritations from certain foods can cause it to open and bleed thus the presence of blood in your anal area. To verify this you need to have a colonoscopy performed. This is a tiny camera on a tube that is put you know where. I would do it as soon as possible.

It could be that you strained too hard when you had a bowel movement. Depends on how much blood there was. Next time you go to the doctor, talk to him and he may refer you to a GI specialist that can perform a colonoscopy.
Most likely, if you increase the fiber and water in your diet, you probably wont have this problem anymore.

Have you had anal sex or taken a really big dump recently? That could be why, or it could be your period and it just leaked to your butt. You might want to go to the doctor if none of these are possibilities.

Could be hemorrhoids which could be irritated because of something you ate or drank. If you are eating highly spiced foods or drinking alcoholic beverages that will do it. Go to webmd .com and look up hemorrhoids. Peace!
