I recently started quilting. I was at a fabric store and I saw a section of fabric labeled "calico". It was all 100% cotton all different colors and prints... I just want to know, what makes a calico, a calico?

True calico is an inexpensively made cotton fabric, unbleached, etc. However, for many people "calico" usually refers to all printed cotton fabrics used for quilting.

'Calico' is a fabric made from unbleached, and often not fully processed, cotton. It may contain unseparated husk parts, for example. The fabric is less coarse and thick than canvas or denim, but owing to its unfinished and undyed appearance, it is still very cheap.
