While the UN could have the potential to be a force for good in the world, it still fails miserably in this area. Diplomacy only works when there is the threat of force. When you pass mandates you are unwilling to enforce, or that are designed to punish the strong for being strong you lose all credibility. Dictators and despots in the world do not respect the UN. Take Saddam Hussein for example. He kicked the weapons inspectors out of Iraq. Does anyone really believe he would have done this if he feared invasion? This should have been the expected the result, but it did not happen. This single act has emboldened other despots like North Korea and Iran to act irresponsibly. The UN is essentially useless for all intents and purposes and this is a situation largely of their own making. Personally, I do not think it will be too many more years before they go the way of the League Of Nations. The question is how much do we have to fear from whatever organization follows in it's footsteps?

Dis-united Nations is a more appropriate term. Yes, it is a toothless, bureaucratic talking shop. NATO has always done a far better job because it comprises just a few nations with very similar philosophies. The UN has members that are positively hostile to each other, eg, Iran and Israel. It also embraces countries with despotic leaders such as N.Korea. It sounds like the construct of a left wing ideological theoretician.

Yes, but there are still legitimate uses for the UN. What needs to happen is serious reform. That is why the US Senate should confirm the appointment of John Bolton as Ambassador to the UN.

Read Inside The Asylum by Jed Babbin.
The Useless Nuisance is actually an enemy of the USA and is used by our enemies as a weapon against us. We are fools to even allow it in our country, let alone participate in its expensive and harmful activities. We should bail and start our own organization of civilized nations.

An alliance of states that are fully committed to democracy. That means no China and Russia had better get her act together.

Are you too blinded by your ignorance to notice WHY the UN was built?

I'd say just pay Osama bin-Laden to fly a couple of airliners into it but he has just too many allies there.
