The United States of America is a federal republic comprised of 50 states located on the North American continent. Actually Hawaii is not on the continent, but this article say just that. See link below.
The United States is comprised of 48 continental or contiguous states that are located between Canada and Mexico and two non contiguous states, Alaska and Hawaii. There is 49 States connected to the North American Continent and not just the United States. For the state of Hawaii, it it disconnected and out into the Pacific Ocean.

49. Alaska is a part of North America, it is simply north of the lower 48, and to the west of Canada. Hawaii is an island, so obviously it i not a part of a continent.

Well, if you said just the U.S. proper ther would be only 48, but since you said the whole continent you have to include Alaska, so there is 49.
