OK, I have High speed internet through a network on the college campus i work/live at. So, I haven't dealt with dial up in years!! HOwever, I have a friend who is gettin into the 21st century and she just got a home phone so that she could get internet at home. Does she have to pay for an internet provider? I used to use aol and i would surf from there, but NOT anymore! Anyone know the most convenient, cost effecient way for her to go using dial up? Can't she use just internet explorer thru dial up? Without paying for an internet provider? Help!!

You need a phone jack that will connect the computer tower (on the back of the computer) to the phone jack on the wall. Once you get this set up, you can test the connection using Windows XP dialup modem test. They usually give you a bunch of local or toll free numbers that can test your dialup connection.

I never heard of dialup connection that is free, but there might be some out there if you ask around or look on search engines. Dialup is REALLY cheap these days, but you will definitely need a dialup access plan to surf the internet on IE. Nowadays, dialup service ranges from $5.00 to $10.00 per month....such as AOL. The dialup company will normally give you a software that they use to connect to their service and its very easy to setup. Once you set it up, you will hear that screeching noise as it connects to the internet and then you will get internet access once connected successfully.

You are going to have to pay for a provider. Go for dsl it's only a few pennies more than dial up these says. I don't know where you live so I can't suggest anything but check with your local phone company in the area or cable vision if she is over 50 and has an AARP card there are some services offered through that also. Above all price check before making a decision as most of theses plans require a contract for a year or two. Good Luck!

First of all, they needs to choose an internet provider. There are a couple that offer a few free hours per month, but trust me... they are more of a hassle just trying to stay online most of the time.

2nd- Internet Explorer is the Browser. It's used with dial up, cable, dsl, etc. It has no impact on your dial up connection & vice versa. It's your way to the internet-where pages load.

3rd- Keep in mind that with dial up, they will not be able to use her phone. These days, if you live in an area where it's available, DSL can be just as affordable as dial up. You can actually do a search for DSL providers & prices, enter your phone # & they'll tell you whether its available. Much quicker speed & the use of your phone at the same time!

They can find dial up for around $10 per month.. dsl i've seen as low as like $22.

Either way, good luck to them!

She will probably have to pay for an Internet Service Provider (IPS), but then there are many free mail boxes in addition to one the ISP will furnish --- such as Yahoo.com, hotmail.com, www.juno.net and others. Expect some advertising on screen with a free mail box.
