The owner of the building is responsible for all repairs.Renters insurance covers your belongings like furniture and clothing etc

Your only loss is any if your items that got burned. The owner of the building is responsible for the structure. So you are in the clear for any holes in walls, or water damage to the property. And no, you are not legally required to have renters insurance, unless its in the terms of your lease.

Bummer. The landlord should have insurance to cover any damages to the building. Renter's insurance only covers your personnel items, so it probably wouldn't help much with this. Landlord may try to charge you for any deductable they have to pay, or any repairs they can't get covered by insurance.

i agree with the answers and suggest you find an insurance agent in your town that carries renter's insurance after the dammage is repaired ASAP it's not that expensive (mine is 30 bucks a quarter for a $20,000 policy due to my collectibles) in lancaster ohio it's Joe Edwards Insurance on east main street i suggest you look into it asap so yer covered in case this happens again

If you had a fire and the fireman punched a hole in something to gain entry or to allow smoke to lesave your apt then the owner of the building must cover the physical damage....your ownly responcible for your own goods and belongings

Read your lease as to responsibility in case of fire. Then read the state landlord-tenant statute for tenant responsibilities. Rule of thumb in rental situation, the landlord is responsible for repairing the structure and fixtures, tenants responsible for the damage to their personal property. Notify the landlord asap; there may be sanctions in the lease for failure to report.

I do not understand HOW you got by without having renter's insurance.. It is a requirement...
