I know people who have had carpal tunnel surgery, and they came to work immediately following the procedure, and none complained of pain. They spent the day typing with both their hands, although less with the one that had surgery. They also spent the day elevating the hand that had the procedure.

While I expect that everyone is different and that you may have pain, I haven't personally seen it in the people who've had the surgery. They started using their hand almost right away.

Honestly, if you can't take off work for it, and have to use your hand at work, its probably something you should have discussed with the surgeon before now. Make sure you mention it to him before the surgery, so he can discuss what you can and can't do after the surgery. Alternatively, maybe you could go to work on "light duty" or be assigned another project for a while while the hand/wrist heals. Good luck.

I had carpal tunnel surgery last week. You should get a doctors certificate, to have time off. For one week my hand was in a half cast, it was very hard to do things. I can't push or pull, I have to use my other hand alot. My hand hurt when I moved it, 2 days ago, I got the stitches out, cast off. Still my hand hurts, it is still weak.
I tried to drive the car, I had trouble. I had open surgery, it can take alot out of you. I go back to work in 3 weeks time. I will still have to be careful.

you will require time off to heal. you will be going under general anesthesia. while it is a short procedure, it is painfull and you will be in a splint afterword. Tell your employer to get real!! have the surgery performed on a friday, so that you will have a few days to recover

You need a note from your Dr. to take off what ever time you need. Your employer cannot penalize you with a Dr. note. You will damage things if you don't let it heal properly. Good Luck!
