An analogy asks the question: what is the nature of the relationship between two things and how is this relationship parallel to another two items?

Here are some examples:

fish is to school as sheep is to flock;
hand is to glove as foot is to sock; and
smile is to happy as frown is to sad.

in the above, a group of fish is called a school and a group of sheep is called a flock; a glove covers a hand and a sock covers a foot; a smile shows that someone is happy and a frown shows that someon is sad.
