The absolute value sign means
either
8 + 5a = 14 - a
or
-(8 + 5a) = 14 - a

Let's solve the first equation:
8 + 5a = 14 - a
5a + a = 14 - 8
6a = 6
a = 1

Now the second equation:
-(8 + 5a) = 14 - a
-8 - 5a = 14 - a
-5a + a = 14 + 8
-4a = 22
a = -22/4 or -11/2

Your solutions are:
x = 1, -11/2
