Being a conventional type, I eat my toast butter side up. That way the delicious melting butter doesn't drip down my chin. But perhaps I am missing a trick. Butter side down means direct application to the tongue. Instant gratification. It must be worth a try!

Mythbusters did a whole show about this. Basically it did not matter. Butter side up landed more often because the knife that puts the butter on the bread concaves it and air passes somehow. But if you could put butter on without the bread being de-formed it would not matter.
