I am looking at Point Park University or the Unversity of Pittsburgh and the University of Hartford, which is actually in West Hartford.

Pittsburgh is a very ethnic city. Many different cultures in different neighborhoods. Polish, Russian, Italians Irish, African Americans, Slavs, and Jewish areas. It depends which university you are going to, but Oakland, Shenley, and Squirell Hill are great places. It is like anywhere else, if you enjoy life, you will enjoy the Burgh!

The University of Hartford is fairly close to some bad parts of Hartford, but it's also not too far from the Governor's mansion and other really expensive houses. There's nothing you can get to by walking, you'd have to drive or take the bus (if there is one, I'm not entirely sure).
I grew up near Hartford, so I don't have a great opinion about it. There's not a whole lot to do there. I've only been to Pittsburg once, though, so I can't offer a comparison.

Within the city, Pittsburgh by far is the better place. Hartford literally collapsed (socially) about 20 years ago and has yet to recover, unfortunately. Not much to do after 5PM except get mugged.
Get away from the city, however, and the area within 100 miles is a thousand
times better and more diverse and interesting and stimulating from Hartford than from Pittsburgh. Within 200 miles is 2000 times better.
If I have sensed out your thoughts correctly from your "Additional Details" let me suggest that you check out schools in Burlington, VT and Montreal, QC (either McGill or Concordia).

I go to school in pittsburgh but i am not from here and i don't really like it. Everything seems run down and there is nothing to do, despite being in a big city. Plus, if you don't like the steelers then you will want to vomit from all the exposure they get. Traffic is terrible at all times of the day and the drivers are rude and crazy. I don't know what Hartford is like but pittsburgh is certainly no gem.
I give it a bad rap because i'm from columbus, OH and it is more of a modern city that's growing whereas pittsburgh is an older city that is shrinking. It's not the worst place on earth but i would not want to live here. Crime is really dependent on what part of the city you are in, as far as i know, most schools here are in pretty safe areas, if i knew which one you were looking at i could tell you more.
