Turning off a pc?

Question

Does anybody know how i can make my pc turn off after a certain amount of time. ie/ Can i make it turn off automatically after 50 minutes??

I want to know because when i record things on the media center i have to leave the pc on through the night and i dont like doing it.

Can anybody help.

Although there's the option to hibernate/standby in XP's control panel if you set it to more than 30 minutes it'll NEVER happen...as XP's built in system checking routines start running after a pc has been idle for 30 minutes, and re-set the timer back to zero.
If your recording softwrae has a timer, set that to record the show...and use hibernate set at whatever suits you. Once the stop timer for the recording kicks in, that may effectively halt the entire program, allowing XP's power saving tricks to run.

There are several free programs that will do that for you. You can find some of them here: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Best/shut-down-pc.html

Just download a freeware one (marked with $0.00) and follow the help instructions. It should be really easy.

Most of them will even alow you to select shutdowntime in several ways: date/time of day + interval etc. Every single one should perform really well since there's not so much deal, and it will not eat you resources.

Don't make the mistake to close that program. Just minimize it and let it run or it will not be able to shutdown anything.

Assuming you have a PC and not a Mac, I can help. First go to your desktop, right click and select properties. Once there go to the screen saver tab and click the button "Power...". Now you should be at a screen that lets you choose when you want your computer to automatically shut off.

you can do this by going to your control panel (should be on your start menu on the task bar).

find the power options icon, double click to open

your first tab is power schemes. you can select any from the drop down menu, but what you are really wanting is in the drop down from "when the battery is plugged in"

from here you can set when your pc is turned off.

as well as the above try a free program called SYSTEM SCHEDULER it is a program that will not only work as a reminder program but can do any operation ( run program ) you wish you can set it up for any application in about 30 seconds NOTE THAT ALL SHUTDOWN programs can be overridden by auto-update programs ( like windows ) and many will not shut down after the update

In reality all computers benefit from being left on. Most now have an application that allows you to set the shut down time. It depends how old it is.

right click the desktop click on properties, click on the screen saver tab then on the power tab set system standby from there and monitor settings then click on apply & ok having your pc plug in over night if there is a powe outage the pc can be damage by the power outage

Its quite simple mate. Go to desktop. Right click and select properties. Click on screensaver. Go to power schemes. You will find all that you need. Enjoy your MCE records. I also do the same !!!

There should be an option when you begin recording or in your setup menu that has a tick box that says "shut down on completion" or something to that effect

There are a lot of shutdown utilities out there. I did a search at pcworld.com for "shutdown utilities" and five different versions are available for download there. Never used one so I can't reccomend.
