I hardly ever bruise. Once I fell off the top rung of a 6 foot ladder and landed on a pile of branches and had NO bruises whatsoever, just pain and general soreness. Another time I got hit on the bony part of my arm by a hammer (stupid friend has no aim). Another time I walked into a metal doorframe and hit my hip bone really hard. All of those times ppl were like "man, that's so gonna bruise!" and I felt incredible pain... but never had any bruises!

Yet today I have this bruise on my shin that I have absolutely no clue how I got it- this happens every now and then, I get random little bruises.

Why don't I bruise from events that should cause major bruises, and why do I have no idea where my bruises come from when I do get them? Anyone else like this?

It just depends on whether or not you damage a capillary ( a very small blood vessel), so that blood spills into the surrounding tissue.

Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't...

The pain does not matter - pain just means you hit a nerve cell with a pain fiber. You can hit the heck out of a pain fiber (causing a lot of pain, like when you hit your hip bone), and yet not break very many capillaries at all (thus, not bruising!).

Othertimes, you may bust a bunch of capillaries...but not hit many pain fiber nerve cells (like on your shin...which has an abundance of easily busted capillaries)....
