Congratulations on starting dance classes!
Here are a few tips:
1) Make sure you wear comfortable clothes that you'll be able to move and stretch in. The last thing you want to worry about is your clothes.
2) Immediately after class, write down notes to help you remember what you've learned.
3) Remember that the teacher and other students have as much at stake as you do. The teacher will want you to be a good representation of his/her work, so it is in her/his best interest to train you well. Your fellow students are usually too worried about doing things correctly to focus on anything you might be doing incorrectly- all of them will make some kind of a mistake.
4) Do stretches at home. These will help increase your flexibility.
5) Practise, practise, practise. The more you practise, the easier it will be. It's scary while you are trying to learn the steps, but eventually your body will learn them, and you won't need to think about them as much.
6) If you're really intimidated, and if dancing is something you really want to pursue, ask about taking private lessons. Most instructors offer them, and it's a great opportunity to provide clarification on anything you might be confused about.
7) Remember to breathe deeply from your stomach. When you get nervous, your instinct is to hold your breathe. Take a moment to breathe from your tummy.
Good luck! I'm so excited for you. I know it sounds trite, but all the other people are just as nervous- some just show it in different ways.

Look around. Everyone else is having fun! Relax, be natural, move with the beat. If you're talking about dance lessons, listen to your teacher and do what you're told.

focus on yourself and the teacher...no one else. That's probably what mostly everyone else in the class is doing too. they might show off a little if they realize you aren't as experienced, but ignore it....you'll be as good as them someday and for all they know you could have taken lessons somewhere else before going to this studio...If the teacher corrects you don't be embarrassed, be thankful....it took me a lot of years to learn that...but now that I do, I'm happy to be corrected because I'd rather to it right and be corrected then not be corrected and look dumb doing it wrong. So take it in a good way that they want to help you become better. Don't be afraid to ask questions....like say you keep landing on the wrong foot after one step and the teacher doesn't notice...ask about it after class and correct it. I'm just rejoining dance after four years and I'm in a more advanced class. My teacher and I know I'll catch up but I still get nervous and I know I'm the worst out of all of them. I realize I'm nervous when my neck and upper chest get blotchy....that's when I take a deep breathe and ask myself why I'm so nervous, then I tell myself that I can be just as good as them and I'm going to catch up and that as long as I try hard and do my best...what else can I do? So yea...that's what I do...hope I could help some.

You need to blend your steps with the feel of the music. Stop thinking so hard in "1...2..3" and feel the music...let it guide you and eventually you'll start blending it the steps in with the feel naturally. Dancing is about having fun man...there's no right or wrong :)

Don't ever be ashamed of making a mistake. Only those who do nothing make no mistakes. But they never achieve anything either.
Everyone in dance class is usually minding their own business, at least, they should be. If they are giving you a judging look it their fault not yours.
