building on Maria and Suzys answers:

Roddenberry and Beerman kept traditional (US) Navy ranks for Star Fleet Officers...Ensign Lieutenant JG, Lieutenant, Lt Commander, Commander, Captain Commodore, Rear, Vice and Admiral Admiral
and they were less clear over the years on enlisted ranks.....sometimes it seems that all Star Fleet ships have 90% officers and a few "Chiefs" and nothing less......

Divisions in the Ship are a lot less clear......there's Captain, Executive Officer , or as the Brits and Jean Luc Picard call them, Number One, Medical, Engineering, Science, Navigation, Communications........and then a few specialty job descriptions as the plot requires.....Security, Counselor, Life Sciences.....just where everyone fits in the chain of command isn't as clear as it would be in a "wet" Navy like the USN or RN...is Counselor Troy part of the Medical Department and thus subordinate to Dr Crusher? Who does Lt Broccoli..I mean Barkley.... report to? Jordi? Data? Riker?

there are seven zillion web sites about the Federation Navy and the answer is out there somewhere....and let me share two Star Trek stories...Nicholle Nichols ( Lt Uhuru) was ready to quit after the first season for a variety of reasons, and grumping about it at a party. A voice behind her said " You CANT quit.We need you as a role model and as example of what we could be". She turned around and the speaker was Martin Luther King Jr........20 years later, Whoppie Goldberg, a pretty big star, signed on as Guinan simple because, she said,as a little girl, dirt poor in Mississippi, I could turn on the TV and see this beautiful black woman working as part of a team and accepted as an officer and equal on the bridge, and I owe a debt to what Lt Uhuru taught me about potential".

Stephen Hawking, a man spoken of in the same breath as Einstein and Newton, once visited the TNG set. Everyone was blown away to have the greatest mind of the 20th Century visiting them, and they quickly re-wrote that weeks show to give him a cameo.....playing poker with Einstein, Newton and Data.......while touring the set, he rolled his wheelchair up to the antimatter warp drive engines, looked at them and said " I'm working on it"

Hurry, Stephen.

I'm not sure I follow your question. Do you mean like captain, lieutenant commander, chief physician, head of security? Maybe you could clarify your question a bit with some sort of example.

They're based on the Navy

ensign, midshipman, Lt. etc

job titles are like the Navy too- engineer, ship's surgeon, security.

Is that what you mean?
