I would start with new wires and plugs and that should fix it. However plugs and wires may not be the only problem. An other reason for misfires is lack of fuel due to clogged fuel filter or weak pump also high amounts of carbon in the combustion chamber will absorb the fuel and it will not allow enough fuel to burn for the combustion process to take place fully IE misfire. Poor compression valves lots of things but keep it simple and use good quality tune up parts. A tow bill will more than make up the differance of cheap non OEM parts.Start will a full tune up wires plugs pcv valve fuel filter and you should have a happy Jeep. Sorry for the rambling but alot of people try to over simplify these things.

Because the ECU is sensing that the plugs are misfiring. Time for a tune up.. New plugs and wires!! Your jeep should not have a distributor being a 97 but if it does then change the cap and rotor too!

if you have a 6 cylinders jeep, the ignition coil pack is bad.this is the most common thing on 6 cylinders.on v-8,inspect spark plugs and plug wires, distributor cap and rotor.once you fix the problem, you need a scan tool to clear the code.

ignition coil or ignition control module is pulling that code..but check your plugs first.. and most of the time you can have both the coil and module bench tested at autozone.
give them a call and they will tell you if they can or not...
good luck
