Economic problems:

A big percentage of the economy comes from the money remittances sent by relatives from outside the Philippines.

Based on Economist.com released in July 22, 2006: economy for 2005 is broken down as follows:

Manufacturing 21-22 %
Agricultural, Fishery, Forestry 15-17%
Services sector 52 %.

Cultural problems:

Too much docility towards those in power. Thus politicians can blatantly abuse power without fear of reprimand.

Political problems:

Too much red tape: a lot of politicking and very little done. Case point: changing street names. There are more important issues to look into than changing street names, but this was given more importance over education, national services.

Those that are capable to change as to how the country is run, are gunned down. Others would not want to enter the political realm because of unethical practices in the Philippine politics.

This is the land of my birth, and I am a Filipino: a survivor in tough political and economic conditions; ever hopeful for a better future.

Economic Issues In The Philippines

Philippine politics whether our politicians and media say has matured, I will frankly say is childish, immature and does not go anywhere. It remained the same since independence. The administration officials try their best to uplift this country, the opposition officials deny them the opportunity for the reason of their being.

Those who have big mouths are the ones heard by media. Those who actively and deligently serve the people are never heard.

Remember what Pres. Manuel Quezon, the foreruner of Phil. independence from America said. " It is better to have a government run like hell by Filipinos than a government run like heaven by the Americans."

Look, what is happening until now. We have a government run like hell. Look at the names of current politicians. They are descendants of big landlords, warlords, old foggies. They aspire not for fame but more to protect their properties/ interests in the guise of public service.

There will always be poverty and unemployment in the Philippines, a country battered by no less than 20 typhoons a year. How much is budgeted for public works. How much of it goes to commissions. How much costs of public works, private properties, agricultural products have been damaged due to typhoons, not to mention lost human lives. There is no end of this. This is a cycle, year after year, after year....

We have a metropolitan city of Manila. I am ashamed of that city.
It stinks of uncollected garbage in streets. They said there's money in garbage. Poor Manilans troop to where the garbage are.
They built their shantees near dump sites. After years, they call it HOME.
Poor Manilans live by the riverside, reclaimed areas, atop a creek or canal, under the bridge and below them the river, under the big billboards, along the railways. And they call it HOME.

Local politicians don't want them removed. They are a rich source of votes. Feed them once in a while and they will be your loyal followers.

Our politicians have this culture of warlordism. If you have no strings of followers, you are not suited as a politician.

These are the realities of the Filipino people who thinks globally but can't do domestically.

Contrary to popular opinion, it is not corruption in by itself that results in these national problems. All nations rich and poor, big and small, young and old have significant corruption in their governments' ranks--as do the Philippines.

The biggest failure in the Philippines socio-eco-politically is a weak government. By weak I do not mean militarily. It is a government which has little power to enforce current laws that protect the welfare of its people and sustain a healthy economy. The government is unable to control the ruling elite classes that have the true control of the nation nor its own military. The government is filled with many individuals that subvert the mandate of the government, which is to serve its people. It is unable to effect policies that result in lifting its people out of extreme poverty by providing opportunities for good education, sound employment, healthcare and other essential public services. As such, the government garners little respect from its constituents and so therefore is often distrusted maligned and eventually ignored by them. Some common people follow the lead of government practices of ineffectiveness and hold it as the standard. These factors in turn feed into the downward spiral of its own and the country's collective ineffectiveness in progressing.

1) The voters are not voting wisely. They would rather choose the popular one than a capable one.

2) Political dynasties. They're making the a business out of politics.

3) Immoral politicians. I can understand people who steal because of poverty, but here in the Philippines it's the educated people (esp people in the government) who steals a lot.

4) Injustice. If you're rich, you won't go to jail. This is a country where justice is not blind.

5) Padrino. In applying for a job here in the Philippines, what matters most is "whom you know" rather than "what you know."

6) Lack of discipline. Every Filipino (yes! me, you, all Filipinos) must learn how to discipline himself. My goodness! We can't even follow a very simple traffic rule!
"NO STOPPING ANYTIME" - but look at all those people standing near the sign, waiting for a jeepney to stop.
"NO PARKING." Right next to it are around 4 to 5 cars!

I am a Filipino by the way. I don't mean to offend anyone or to degrade the Filipinos. I'm just saying what I see in my country. But, despite of all this... I am proud to be a Filipino. PINOY AKO!!

Economically, most Filipinos are living in poverty due to wrong attitude for the future. Bahala na is their favorite motto. Enjoy today for tomorrow or in the near future they will die. Politically, corruption can be minimized but never can be eradicated because there are so many ways how to practice corruptions. Dynasties are not bad, except when being abused. It is not likewise in the system, it is on the person holding the position. Let us not blame the system, blame the people under that system. Change the people not the system. Change the driver, not the car. Right?

the changes in the way of life should come from the people it self! look at it, people still throw things on the streets and destroy the forest! then when floods and calamities came, who to blame? the government! Tapos tatawid sa freeway pagnabangga, blame the government kasi di inayos ang bakod! walang tirahan, squatter, kasi ayaw magtarabaho sa bukid! We all want to do things easy and blame the president! kahit sino ang pres, this things will happen! so time to change attitudes and strive, do not depend on the govt!

me too, i love the phil. but our greatest problems is our government the way it is being run by the most intelligent woman and most corrupt president in the history, worse than marcos, and she is the conjugal magnananak of the bayan aided by his husband , if we can just replaced it peacefully and charge them in court and all of their ill gotten weatlh will be consficated and return to the treasury even those past corrupt govt. official should be brought to justice maybe then our country will become a truly democratic and happy one.

politicians who act like kids
political dynasties (for example, current mayors grooming their sons to be the next mayor--no need for elections! yay!)
foolish citizens who kowtow to the foolish whims of those in power.
philippine politics in itself is crap.
politics is the root of all evil in the phil.

God save our country from those people.
