Catholics are Christians. They believe that Jesus was the promised Messiah, and that's the essence of Christianity.

Catholics are a subset of Christians. The differences in what the different sects believe are largely in terms of methodology of worship and structure of the church organization.

A few of the things Catholics believe that other subsets of Christianity do not include:

Confessing one's sins to a priest, from whom one receives absolution (forgiveness), usually after some acts of penitence like reciting specific prayers a given number of times.

Not allowing women to be priest, nor allowing priests to marry.

Using a lot of Latin in services and prayers (differing opinions about why they do that. As the man said in Fiddler on the Roof, "Tradition!")

No form of contraception other than abstinence is allowed.

There are other differences, but the bottom line is, they're more alike than they are different.

Catholicism is NOT a sect. It's the original form of Christianity. All other Christian denominations are watered-down versions of the truth. They came about when King Henry VIII fell out with the pope because he wouldn't allow him to divorce his wife.

We believe that saints can intercede for us and that Our Lady is the most important saint, so we honour her. We do NOT worship her and do not believe that she is as important as God or anything like that.

they believe in the same Creator God - who is triune in nature [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit], but the differences are numerous and were spelled out by Martin Luther in his famous 95 theses that he nailed to the door of the (then Catholic) church in Wittenburg, Germany. His protests led to what is called the Protestant movement.

Protestant Christians generally reject the unbiblical practices and rituals of the Catholic church.

Things they (protestants) reject are:

praying to saints (they can't do anything, so why pray to them, when the person we are to pray to is God - He is the only one who can make things happen or keep things from happening.

adoring Jesus' mother above what she is entitled to. She is a mere person (and she isn't to be prayed to - God alone is to be prayed to, according to the Bible). She is noble and a saint and is with the Lord in Heaven, but she is a mere human, not an angel and not a God, and certainly not a savior figure, as the Catholic church has made her out to be . .

Elevating the teachings of the Catholic church to the same level as Scripture, instead of holding Scripture as the highest communication from God, without equal. The Catholic church has done this, and has made (in their teachings) the Pope "infallible". . kinda leaves them in a pickle about how to explain to Muslims that he was wrong in quoting a 14th century leader in saying Islam conquers by the sword and that that's a bad thing. . and of course they CONFIRMED that that is how Muslims conquer by making all kinds of threats and engaging in violence against church targets because he spoke the truth about them. .

The Catholic church also teaches that you need to confess your sins to a priest (a mere man), while the protestants teach that you can go directly to God, which is the pattern seen in the Bible.

hmmm. . there are other differences as well, the biggest of which, in my opinion, is their teaching that you are saved (in part) by works (good deeds), rather than completely by God's grace, which is what God teaches in the Bible and the early church taught as well.

The Catholic church has departed from the truth in many areas, but that's the most damaging area (the area of how one is saved, how one receives salvation). The Catholic church has created one of the most unbiblical systems of belief, a very man-made system, rather than the system God set forth in the Bible and the New Testament church.

With that understanding, which would you think is the right way?

A lot of different religions believe in the same God, some even refer to Him by different names....they just all have different ideas about what He is saying to us, and about what He wants us to do.

Christians believe in Jesus. Catholics believe in the holy trinity
( the father, son and holy spirit). That is the main difference.
