A 1st is the best

Then comes a 2nd. This is divided into 2:1 (better) and 2:2 (worse)

Then comes a 3rd

A 2:2 is also known as a Desmond [i.e. Tutu]

A 3rd is also known as a Richard [i.e. Richard the IIIrd]

Slim Reaper got is a bit wrong I'm afraid - You can get any grade from a 2:2 or above with honours - I have a 2:2 with honours. It's to do with whether the course is an honours course or not. You only don't get an "honours" if you get third (or fail, of course).

First = A
2:1 (Upper Second) = B
2:2 (Lower Second) = C
Third = D
Fail (although most will "drop-out" or repeat the last year rather than register a fail, I think)

Okay, so I got a 2:2, but it was at Brunel University, which counts for a lot more - and Carol Vorderman only got a 2:2 as well! Give it a couple of years out at work, and it just becomes whether you have a degree or not - the grade no longer matters, as you will have either proven yourself or not.

A 1:1 is called a first, equavalent to an A, a 2:1 is equivalent to a B, 2:2 = C and a third is equivalent to a D. You get them assigned at the end of your degree, the best you can get is a 1:1 the worst award is a third or a fail.

there are 4 different grades you can get in university. They are (in order highest to lowest)
first, second and third. The second is spilt into a 2:1 (a higher second) and 2:2 (a lower second).
Usually if you get a 3rd you are considered to be someone who doesn't work very hard, but it does depend on which university you graduate from. A third from Oxford or Cambridge is much better than a first from some of the new universities.
Hope this helps

basically 2:1, 2:2 are classifications of your degree. its like saying a got an 'A' or 'B' overall at uni. the higher the number the better your degree is. so a 2:1 is a really good degree and to get that you must get over 60 odd% in all your assignments and so on for a 2:2 etc.....
the third class degree is considered a pass degree where an individual just about passess all their assignments at the basic passing mark required for the year.
hope that helps you to understand. :)

There are five different results u can get at uni. The highest is a 1st class honours, then 2.1, then 2.2., then a 3rd and last of all a fail.

Majority of employers do not even ask which one u got as long as its not a fail so don't worry if u r like me and will probably only manage a 2.2 or possibly a 2.1.

They are 3rd, 4th & 5th degree placings.

The best you can get is First Class with honours, then comes first class (without honours), followed by 2:1, 2:2 and 3rd class.

2:1 is the average acceptable pass mark, a bit like a grade C. 2:2 is a grade D (yes you got your degree, but there's nothing to brag about and you'll leave the fact it was a 2:2 off your CV).

3rd class is technically a pass, but in the outside world it's definately a fail. When the advert says 'graduate required' a 3rd won't get you in.

There are four 'grades' you can get:

First
2:1 (sometimes called 'upper second')
2:2 (sometimes called 'lower second')
Third.

Think of it as A, B, C and D.
