Try looking for spectral imaging or hyperspectral imaging. The process involves looking at portions of the spectrum to find the particular details you are looking for. For example, looking at a planet through an optical telescope, you might see clouds. If you looked for specific doppler shift, you could see how those clouds are moving. Looking for radiation patterns emitted by specific chemicals, you can determine the make-up of the atmosphere.
It's used to look at the earth to determine the health of our forests. It's used medically to examine blood flow.
Lots of uses and not that secret.
