There are plenty of cells that don't have mitochondria. These cells are called "prokaryotes" and include all the bacteria and cyanobacteria. In these cells, chemical reactions occur in the cytoplasm instead of being compartmentalized.

But -- your kind of cells, eukaryotes, use mitochondria as the place where glucose (a simple sugar) is reacted to provide high-energy electrons. Eventually carbon dioxide and water are produced from the glucose and oxygen. The energy from the high energy electrons is passed along the cytochrome system, with ATP being synthesized from ADP and inorganic phospate.
ATP stores energy which is used to "power" other reactions within the cell.

From Wikipedia:

n cell biology, a mitochondrion (plural mitochondria) (from Greek μιτος or mitos, thread + κουδριον or khondrion, granule) is an organelle, variants of which are found in most eukaryotic cells.[1] Mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants," because they convert organic materials into energy in the form of ATP via the process of oxidative phosphorylation. Usually a cell has hundreds or thousands of mitochondria, which can occupy up to 25% of the cell's cytoplasm. Mitochondria have DNA and may, according to the endosymbiotic theory, be descended from free-living prokaryotes whose closest modern-day relative is thought to be rickettsia bacteria.

Mitochondria have a function in immunity and programmed cell death.
