do i need a DSL router for a broadband connection through a phone line,

Not necessarily. The phone line can go directly to the modem on your PC (internal or external modem) from where you dial your ISP for Internet access.

However, if you desire to share the Internet access by phone line with another PC on your local area network (LAN), then you would need to configure Internet Sharing on your PC. In such a case, your PC would act as a router to other PCs on your LAN.

So, a DSL router is not necessary for you to dial your local ISP through phone line.

The DSL provider will provide you a free DSL modem to allow one PC to access internet at one time. A wireless router will allow you to have more than one PC or laptop to share the broadband connection through wireless. This wireless router can be purchase through provider or the local computer store.

Any router will do. Some come with DSL modem built in.
