There is a "show/hide" toggle button on the tool bar in Word for this. The button has ¶ on it. One click will enable, one more will hide.

The Show/Hide feature may be on. Word includes a frequently useful feature that makes visible some of the normally unseen formatting characters, such as spaces and paragraph marks. Spaces show up as dots between words. While they don't print, they can make it difficult to read the screen. Turn this feature on or off with the Show/Hide ¶ button, denoted by the paragraph symbol (¶) on the toolbar.

Locate that paragraph symbol on your toolbar and press it. Then the codes will be hidden.
