I have an opportunity to train at another job, with a meeting afterwards 2 c how we like each other. I presently work at a tiny company- we all know each others' life storys. I do have family in another state, i could invent a relative (funeral) (live in same town as boss, could run into each other) or is honesty the best policy? Present boss knows I'm miserable there, but doesnt know I've been looking.

Just say you have exhaustion and you just need to relax. Kind of what Mariah Carey had, a nervous breakdown and you just can't work. Tell your boss you have to take some time off to take care and to recouperate.

Most employers require a physicians note if you are out for more than 3 days. The boss may know you are miserable, but he/she must still trust you. If you lie, and this training doesn't work out... you could be even more miserable should your boss find out.. or be with out a job all together. I say be honest, or ask if you can use some personal or vacation time.

Don't you have any vacation time available? I don't know what you currently do for a living, but maybe you could make up some sort of retreat weekend, out of town investment seminar, a friend paying for a vacation weekend, who knows? Just be prepared to answer a zillion questions when you get back. I used to work at a company like that, and I don't think I ever could have gotten away with a whopper lie-those people were relentless!

It's hard to be honest to your boss. Are you sure you have the other job in hand. If you are completely possitive that you have the other job, Id go for the honesty. Other than that I would make up an excuse such as death in the family or do you even have vaca time? just take the 4 vaca days

I'd make up a family gathering. Make sure your mom knows so she doesn't call your work asking for you. If you need more time, then say you caught a virus from a relative and your mom wants to take care of you. I don't use my mom very often, but I think she has fun fooling the people at my job.

Invent a family emergency that is going to keep you in town, but going to take up your time during the day. That way if you see someone at night, you can conversate like you normally would. Don't pretend to be sick and don't invent a death in the family - bad juju.

Usually honesty is the best policy, could put it diplomaticaally say you need to be off to take care of personal business. If questioned, just say you can't discuss it at the moment.

Say that you need to take four vacation days to take a crash course in whatever subject matter you will be training in. If boss asks who is offering the course, just say the first name of your new boss who is an acquaintance of yours.

Check your employee handbook if you have one. With the HIPA Law you do not have to release information but with most companies after 3 days they may want a doctors note... otherwise ... dead in the family out of town
