OK as an old fart who went to school in the 80's. I can qualify to answer your question.
There were several groups that were popular during that time. There were Preps...Think Pink and Green. Tops siders, Khakis, Whale and sailboat motifs.
There were the new wavers...Listen to the kinks or the pretenders..Think tuxedo jackets...Skinny ties...peg leg pants...Capezio jazz shoes and perfectly manicured semi long hair..
There were the true Punks...Listen to the sex pistols or the clash...Leather jackets...Makup...Plaid pants or peg leg jeans...Combat boots or chuck taylor all stars...Multible piercings. Ripped t-shirts
Then there were the Jocks...Tan timberland boots...Jeans or courderoy pants...Plaid shirt...Varsity letter jacket...Feathered back hair...
Then there were the 80's corporate types..3 peice power suit with the official power tie of that year. and matching power shirtPower colors are yellow tie with french blue shirt. White shirt with orange tie..White shirt with purple tie....with wing tip shoes and a matching brief case.
Pick a look that most resembles your personality and go for it. Good Luck!

Palazzo Pants, Jumpsuits, Overalls, lots of hairspray, heavy on the jewlery, leg warmers, Lacoste Polos, Leggings, SPANDEX, lace, rubber bracelets, paint splattered clothing, old school pumas, neon colors, Levi's, Mini skirts, off the shoulder tops, door knocker earrings, Vans, zipper ankle jeans, velcro sneakers, shirts with hoods, stirrup pants, tube tops, underoos, parachute pants, patterned jeans, rainbow shirts, Jellies, Old school Converse high tops, Adidas, bike shorts, jean jackets, Dusters (floor length denim jackets), charm bracelets and necklaces, fingerless gloves, ribbon belts, Jordache jeans, trenchcoats, big sunglasses, swatches, jumpers, gothic look, big belts, BIG patterns, and don't let me forget shoulder pads! Also, poleyster like, yellow suits. With shoulder pads. Aaah yes.
I suggest like, neon bikeshorts. Those would be sweet. Not all of these styles are for guys obviously, but watch like FAME. Or an old jazzercize video. Best answer here I come! Ah, just kidding. Do what you want.

Wear an izod or polo shirt - pull up the collar....and top it off with a Member's Only jacket! If you can find a pair of parachute pants - you'll be the hit of the party!

Pink shirts, tight pants, lots of colors, weird colored eyeshadow, big hair with LOTS of hair spray, funky patterns like mixing a shirt with stars with a skirt with stripes, leg warmers, sweat pants. You name it!
That and some women wore dress shirts with skirts and black hats, men wore head bands and hi rise shorts with ugly colored shoes.
