Using the brakes, wears down the pads/shoes, causing the dust.
If your brakes work, don't squeak, and don't pull to one side, they may not be a problem. But, if you have lots of brake dust on the front rims & none of the back, you may want to modify the brake balance.

My chrome rims on my Corvette all have exactly the same amount of dust - they all look black. I suppose I COuld go a little easier on the brakes. But where's the fun in that ? It'd just take longer to get places.

This is common if not universal for disc brakes. Do like INDIA W said and get some ceramic brake pads if they are available for your vehicle and you will be very satisfied. I put some on my Astro van and it all but eliminated the dust problem and they stop the vehicle better and don't make any noise. They are supposed to last longer too and be easy-er on the rotors. Of course any time you change brake pads have your rotors turned.

You may need to upgrade your brake pads. If your vehicle has metallic or semi-metallic pads on it, it's metal rubbing on metal. You can purchase a ceramic brake pad from any automotive parts store. You'll be very satisfied! No brake dust OR noise. This is not just an opinion, i work for an automotive company and I switched to ceramics after being told about it. I have NO complaints. Hope this helps:)

brake dust is normal but if you are getting alot it usually means you are ridding the brakes, slow down and gently apply the brakes. It not the nascar circut out there you will get there more often if you treat your $30,000.00 investment like it should be then if you ignore what it is trying to tell you

you are probably "riding the brake". one foot on brake and gas...use your right foot for both,,not only makes sense but is a safety thing.,....quit riding your brake.
