Weight training will help somewhat. Watching and training like a track sprinter is of little use simply because the running motion of a football player (with pads and equipment on) is entirely different that what you'd be taught as a sprinter. Bottom line is that speed is not something you can 'teach' people. You either have it or you don't. Weight training and specialized workouts may help marginally (maybe cut 1 to 2 tenths off your 40 time) but you shouldn't be hoping for a huge gain.

Run, Jog, Walk, Push Ups, Sit Ups, Pull Ups, Stretching. Do these everyday for a set time, and stick to it. I am almost sure if you eat right (stay of the sweets) and stick to your daily fitness you will see an increased speed, power, and agility. You must remember once or twice a week won't cut it. If you want real results I would run around you block everyday. Do a few sit-ups/ push-ups before you go to sleep. Think about what you are eating before you swallow, because it will come back to you. Just remember practice running everywhere you can. I also recommend you talk to your coach about a certain stance that may help you run faster with your pads on (eg. bend forward more). Hope this helps!

The best way you can increase your speeds is to get a pair of ankle weights and wear them while jogging and any other daily activity. Just don't over do it. After you do this for a while your speed will have increased. My friend how plays in the NFL did this before the combine and he shaved about 5/10ths of his 40 yard time. He was running a 5.0 second 40 which if you are a lineman or linebacker isn't bad or even a fullback if you are big. He went to a 4.5 after the weights.

the same question for me arose while i was trying to join a Semi-Pro arena football team. the only think i needed to work on is my footwork and boost my speed a little bit.

Join the Gym, apon joining i was givin 2 free personal trainer days where the trainer evaluates me and gives me a workout routine. i've been there for a little over a month and can easily tell my acceleration and speed has increased.

do a lot of cardio workouts focusing on your calves and thighs, also on all of the leg workout do sets of 10-12 instead of Maxing out each time. most eliptical machines have a target zone for running, make sure you never finish a workout before you hit the cardio zone, and last but not least run sprints, just short bursts for several reps will get you to what you desire.

There are actually several techniques for improving your running speed, learnt by watching a olympic sprinter's excercise warm-up that his trainer said actually did improve running speed.

First, jog slowly while kicking your butt with your feet for a while.
Then, do many back-of-the-shin stretches by placing you hands on a wall and pushing
Third, you hold you waste, and push it forward so you're leaning slightly back.
Fourth, while sprinting, move your hands faster and faster and breath strong and fast (but be careful not to hyperventilate)
Finally, practice, practice and practice!

Try running 2 miles if that is to much then 1 mile. Start at at jog for 1 min sprint for 20 sec or so depending on your ability. Continue to do this increasing the sprint time and distance througout the run. This method has improved my run time my minutes a mile.

To improve your running speed you need to train the right energy system this means running five to ten yard sprints long distance running will do nothing for you. Keep it short and explosive. Things like short sprints, cone drills, and sport specific is the way to go.

Ask the track coach at your school and see if he/she can offer some help. They teach people to run fast all the time.
