Typically five times energy wise and up to eight times lifetime. A 12 watt low energy lamp will give the light equivalent to a 60 watt tungsten lamp, and will last about 10 times as long. The additional cost of the lamp coupled with the reduction in energy costs result in a saving of about 70% over its life of appx. 8000 hours. A normal lamp has a life of about 1000 hours.
1) low energy 12 watt lamp £4.00 max. 8000 hours energy @ 8p/kwh = £7.68 Total £11.68
2) 8 x 60watt gls lamps @ 35p = £2.80 + 8000 hours energy @ 8p/kwh £38.40 Total £41.20
(You can't compare an 11 watt l/e to a 100 watt lamp. you would have to compare a 100 watt with a 20 watt)

An 11Watt energy saving light bulb will use 11/100 of the power of a 100W light bulb. The mean time before failure of a standard 100W light bulb is about 1000 hours, whereas the life expectancy of a energy saving bulb can be 10,000 hours.
The cost of a standard light bulb is about 50p, therefore, it has a lifetime cost of 2.005 pence per hour. The energy saving bulb has a lifetime cost of 0.027 pence per hour. but the initial outlay is more.
All because the energy efficient light bulb doesn't get hot.

I heard that if every home changed one of their reguler bulbs with a energy saving bulb, that would be the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off of Americas roads.
