There is nothing stopping a virgin using tampons, unless she has particular want to keep her hymen in tact, the hymen does not really mean anything it being broken is not a reflection on whether a girl or woman is a virgin or not, it is just that some girls and women prefer to keep their hymen in tact for cultural reasons. Your hymen can break, partially break or stretch prior to tampon use from any other penetration such as from masturbation, sex or gynaecological exams, or it can break from activities such as sports or horse riding. You know whether your hymen is in tact or not and whether-or-not it breaking would be an issue for you or not.

If you are younger than tampons do pose added risk because the negative effects of tampons on health are amplified due to the way in which the mucosa in your vagina develops and because your body may not be as well equipped as someone older to deal with the infections and illnesses that tampons can cause – such as toxic shock syndrome or infections such as bacterial vaginosis – as such tampons are not recommended to young women, in fairness due to risks to vaginal health tampons are generally no longer recommended. If young then it is far safer to stick with free-flow methods or pads, then when older if you still want to use internal menstrual products menstrual cups or softcups such as Divacup or Instead's are recommended.

Tampons can hurt if they break your hymen – the hymen breaking or stretching does not always hurt, everyone is different for some girls/women it hurts, for some they do not feel it, for others it is even pleasurable. Tampons are dry wads of material being inserted into a moist delicate environment so they can cause friction, and if you use commercial tampons such as Tampax then the chemicals they use can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Tampons are linked with various health risks, they can also contribute to menstrual cramps because of their effect on vaginal health and because they can expand into the cervix. If you do not insert the tampon far enough into your vagina it can also cause some serious menstrual-cramp type pain – if you do use tampons and this occurs then remove the tampon and try again.

If you do use tampons over other options then risks can be reduced by using organic tampons such as Natracare, sponge tampons such as Jade & Pearl, or even using homemade tampons, you can also reduce the risk by making sure to change them regularly, don't wear tampons to bed and use the lowest absorbency for your menstrual flow.

I have gone swimming with tampons many, many times. It's perfectly okay. If you aren't used to using them, practice beforehand. Start with the slimmer ones. There are detailed instructions in every box, read them carefully and follow them. If you are practicing "dry" use some KY Jelly on them to avoid irritation. I recommend Playtex Gentle Glide. I never have "accidents" because of the way they are made, nearly accident-proof. You will probably want to take extras. You need to change them at least every 8 hours, and I always do after swimming. If you don't want your extras in plain view, you can put them in a small make-up bag that isn't see-thru. That's what I do. You can also use an extra case for glasses. Basically anything they'll fit in will work. I once knew a girl who would carry one spare in a clean toothbrush case! Don't worry about tampons and swimming, or showering. I think that's why they were invented! Take some spares, take your Midol, and have fun!

Tampons are okay. Sometimes using tampons hurts the first time but it doesn't hurt that bad. I like using tampons better than pads so I didn't mind the pain. After the first time it won't hurt. Just make sure it's not too dry when you put the tampon in or pull it out or that hurts.

It always first the first time because that is something new that you are trying. The hymen will not break. The tampon will just slide by the hymen. Don't worry, tampons are the way to go.

tampons are okay i use them sometimes at the end of my cycle. start out with the smaller. also it depends on your monthly flow. i use kotex because i like all that crap out of me. i don't enjoy wearing the big boats but I'm use to it.tampons make my cramps very much worse. if it hurts you may need to make sure your using them properly instructions in the box. if they do hurt it will soon end. don't douche it messes your pH balance up. poor alittle white vinegar in your bath water from time to time.i know people read this and it can be embarrassing but my last 4 paps i was told i have a very clean vagina not even sexually active and i am with one partner. address these questions to your doctor he/she can inform you.stay healthy. any symptoms on the box for toxic shock syndrome discontinue and call your doctor immediately. thanks

I recently read my daughters friends book and was surprised to read that you can use tampons even if you're a virgin. I've never used tampons and I have no desire to but maybe your mom, doctor or friend can advise you on how-to.

It can be very uncomfortable to use one if you are a virgin. A menstrual cycle is meant to leave the body, not stay in it. By using tampons you run a risk of toxic shock syndrome from leaving them in to long. Talk to your doctor before trying, but if you are inclined to try to use a tampon, please wait until you are on your period and don't try to "try it out" before hand, they don't come out very easily without moisture.

It won't hurt at all - they even make "junior" sized so you might want to start with those. Just make sure to CHANGE them at least every 4 hours so that you avoid Toxic Shock Syndrome.
