You can separate sand and water by placing the mixture in a bowl or a large tube and the sand will actually go to the bottom and the water will stay on top. This happens because sand is more dense than water.

If you have unlimited supplies, use a strainer lined with a coffee filter placed in a bowl. The water will filter through leaving the sand behind.

You could put the sand/water mixture in a coffee filter and let the water drip into a container, for one.

You spray cat urine on top of sand and heat it in frying pan until sand grains start poping up in air and you catch them.
