I'm going to answer with the obvious:

Shakespeare.

He solidified and recorded the plot devices and character archetypes that we still use today. The themes of his works are still relevant in today's world. More than those two reasons, he was the first dramatist to treat his characters as true individuals with competing motivations and feelings.

Definitely Shakespeare.

The Greeks. Sophocles. Aristotle even said he was the greatest writer. In fact he based his book the Poetics on his play Oedipus. Many people base play writing on Sophocles standards. So why not the greeks the orgins of theatre.
Plus Shakespeare followed his writing after the Greek playwriters Euripides.

Interesting. You ask "who IS..." and you get answers with dead people. That's the thing about theatre. Every time you play, it comes alive. Best dead playwright: Sophocles. Best live playwright: Stoppard.
