Its 16
256/2=128/2=64/2=32/2=16
but we have divided by 2 four times, which means we have 256 by 16 already but since the answer 16, it mean we have reach the square root. You can use this method to get a estimate just divide by two all time until the total divided equal or less then equal the answer eg
the square root of 25
25/2=12 (total divided=2)
12/2=6 (total divided=4
6/2=3 (total divided=6)
but now the answer is less then the total divided so we know the answer is greater then 6 but less then four which in this case is 5.
Obviously this is stupid for 25 but is just an example use this with bigger numbers and then once you worked out possible numbers then just multiple them by their self's
For a big number for example
526
526/2
263/2
132/2 (just rounded off doest really matter)
72/2
37/2
17 but now 2^5=32 so we know the answer is between 17 and 37
so multiple number between 17 and 37 till you get 526. It the best i can do.
Actually aswer is something between 21 and 22

The answer is 16.
16x16=160+96=256
Without using a calculator you can narrow in on square roots
By starting with easy square roots , one higher and one lower than the one you are looking for. You know 10 squared=100
and 20 squared =400 so your answer is between 10 and 20.
Try 15.
15x15=225--too low.
Try 16
Voila! 16x16=256
Another way that will work for perfect squares is to factor the number into its prime factors and then group them into two groups.
For 256 you start by dividing by two. In this case you just keep dividing by 2 until you are left with
256=(2)(2)(2)(2)(2)(2)(2)(2)
Put the factors into 2 equal groups to get
256=16x16 so the square root of 256=16

the best way to work it out would be a factor tree
which would be this:
256
/\
2 128
/ /\
2 2 64
/ / /\
2 2 2 32
/ / / /\
2 2 2 2 16
/ / / / /\
2 2 2 2 2 8
/ / / / / /\
2 2 2 2 2 2 4
/\
2 2
so therefore the square root is 2+2+2etc =16
got a little messed up
but i hope u see the point

256=2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2
square root of 256=2*2*2*2 the rule being for every pair of identical factors in the number the square root will have 1 factor
so the answer is 16

16 X 16 = 256.
16^2 = 256
16 squared = 256, thus the square root of 256 = 16.
A square root is the number that when multiplied times itself gives the number under the square root sign.

16 x 16 = 256
I am not good at math, all I can tell you is that 16 times by itself = 256....I can't work it out...but you can go here and try and make sense of it...http://www.homeschoolmath.net/teaching/square-root-algorithm.php
