It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

GOOD FOR YOU!!! I am one last pack in the carton away from trying to quit. 37 hours can sure seem like an eternity. Accept that you WILL be cranky for awhile and try to remember to breathe. Chew gum. Get a patch if you can. Keep a really stinky ashtray around and take a deep whiff of it to remind yourself what your mouth smells like after smoking a cigarette. Look at something beautiful - nature, your kids, whatever - to remind yourself that you are giving yourself the gift of a healthier day on this earth to appreciate everything.
Be there for me when I try to quit, coz it sure is easier to GIVE advice than TAKE it. HANG IN THERE!!!!

chew gum, hold a toothpick in your hand the same way you would hold a cig. and take a "drag" off the toothpick to lower anxiety by calming the EXTERNAL PHYSICAL part of smoking. Smoking is about two parts physically, internal and external. So 50% of the smoking habit is the movement of your hand to your mouth taking drags. that 50% taken care of will calm your nerves 50%, simple as that.

Go to "rasta" store. You know the one I'm talking about. Normally near a college, 50% employees have dreads be they white or black, really natural smelling. Go there and buy a chewstick. Basically flavored stick but it really helps with oral cravings.

Good for you, keep it up. You'll be better off in the long run. I don't really have any solutions for you other than the usual (chewing gum, cough drops, hard candies, brush your teeth)

Maybe the "fire" jolly ranchers?
You've made it this far, don't give up now! Maybe you should print out a picture of a cancerous lung and look at it every time you feel like a smoke.
Good luck to you, I hope you make it! :o)
