I did my glucose tolerance test last Sat, and got the result yesterday that I failed the test. I got the result detail from the hospital but there are some descriptions I don't understand. I am high in Glucose, 1hr/50gm and MCH, but low in RBC Count, Hemoglobin, and Hematocrit. What are they and what do they function during the preganacy?

You should not be alarmed by failing the first glucose test. They will adminster a longer version and thendecide what your course of treatment should be. I failed ALL 4 of my first ones, but turned out borderline on the longer tests, so they put me on a glucose monitor and a diabetic diet. (If your flunk the long test, you will monitor and take pills and/or shots to control your insulin levels)

I owuld be more concerned with the other results of that bloodwork. You need some iron girl! Talk to your doctor.

GCT GTT
Im not sure how it works where u come from but in Australia my patients have a 2 step screening process

The first test is a
~~~ glucose challenge test 50 gm of sugar done at 26-28weeks
~~~this could be up becasue you ate something sweet or fatty or substantial prior to the test it is generally not a diagnosis of diabetes but it does mean you need another test as soon as possible

The next step the doctor should take you to is
~~~glucose tolerance test where u fast from midnight have a fasting blood sugar level, a drink of 75 gm of sugar then a one and two hour blood test. This is a diagnostic test that says yes or no you have diabetes in pregnancy.
Diabetes is, if not monitored, a serious problem in pregnancy so follow up with your tests and talk to your doctor or midwife
RBC MCH Haematocrit and Haemoglobin
Your other results relate to the levels of red cells in your blood in varying stages of their life
It means yours are low and you have anaemia depending on the level mild mod or severe
Pregnant women consume 3x the amount of iron in pregnancy compared to their non pregnant counterparts thus u need to increase the iron in your diet and a suppliment daily. No more than 300 mg a day.
Low iron makes you tired, breathless, headaches, grumpy, weepy and lots more as your oxygen levels get lower because there are less red cells to carry oxygen to your tissues.
Its all fairly common but must be managed appropriately to help you through a safe and healthy pregnancy
I declined my last one after I kept vomiting and having to retake the test with the first 2 children. The doctor told me that it really is not a vital test and gives many false positives. Instead he had me eat a normal breakfast, some doctors tell you exactly what amounts to eat, and then did the fingerprick. He said this is much more accurate anyhow.
The other test results sound like anemia. You need to discuss the results with your doctor you might need to take iron supplements. If you failed your glucose test you might need to change your diet to control your blood sugar levels. Definately talk to your doctor right away.
I unfourtunantly can not help you with the medical terms, but I can tell you that just becasue your one hour glucose came back high doesnt mean you have diabetes or any casue for concern. I had mine done and it came back high, followed up with the 3 hour test and came back fine. If you took the test not fasting that could affect it. I hope this helps out.
glucose=sugar intake
hemoglobin=has to do with blood count. possibly anemic
now you will probaly have to do another more involved gluclose screen, which is three hours long at least.
These are not questions you should ask on the internet. You need to call your doctor.
