Water likes to osmose across cell membranes. That means that water moves from locations of higher concentration to locations of lower concentration until equilibrium is reached. When salt dissolves into the saliva in your mouth, the water becomes less concentrated than the water in the cells of the inside of your mouth. As a result, water leaves those cells, attempting to dilute the salty environment. That's why you become thirsty; the cells are becoming dry. When you consume the beverage, there is enough water to dilute the salt to a point comperable to the mineral concentration in normal cells, and the water concentrations return to normal.

Water travels from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration through osmosis. If you eat salty popcorn the area outside the cells becomes the area of low concentration since there is now a higher concentration of salt. So the water from your cells travels through the cell membrane to this area of low concentration. You are thirsty becasue you now do not have enough water in your cells.
